Barcsay scores winner in man-of-the-match performance

Puskás Academy triumph over ten-man Fradi

2011. április 22.

Tournament hosts Videoton Puskás Academy won the opening match of the 2011 PUSKÁS SUZUKI CUP by seeing off ten-man Ferencváros 3-2 in match which saw all five goals scored in the first 24 minutes at Felcsút.

Both teams were certainly in the mood to enjoy the beautiful sunshine beating down on them and played with abandon in the first period of the first half, the first goal coming after just seven minutes when the Puskás Academy's Bálint Halász blasted a 30 metre free-kick into the Ferencváros net after his teammate Márk Barcsay had been fouled by Fradi defender Benjamin Kónya.

Just five minutes later though the visitors were back on level terms when Viktor Lipcei's deep right-wing cross was headed in off the crossbar at the back post by Olivér Schön. A team is often at their most vulnerable when they've just scored though and so it proved here when just seconds after the restart Martin Hudák restored the Puskás Academy's lead in spectacular fashion, volleying in from the left channel after the ball found its way to him a full 35 metres from goal.

The breathless start to this contest showed no sign of abating when in the 17th minute the hosts scored a third goal, largely thanks to a goalkeeping error by Ferencváros goalkeeper Csaba Dániel who called to collect a long through-ball from Halász but was beaten to the ball by the head of Barcsay who then was left with the task of squeezing the ball into an empty net.

At 3-1 down Ferencváros were facing a uphill task to get back into the game but they were handed a lifeline in the 24th minute when Puskás Academy defender Patrik Pápai upended Ádám Bilacsics inside the left edge of the penalty area and Fradi striker Richárd Bokányi confidently stroked the resulitng spotkick into the mid-right corner of the net.

It seemed as if the goals would flow for ever but surprisingly this was the last time the scoresheet changed as both teams became more and more tired and the inevitable flurry of substitutions commenced. Just before the hour Barcsay nearly made it four for the the Puskás Academy when his curling shot from just outsdie the area struck the right hand post but it bounced back across the goal and out to safety. Fradi rarely threatened but one of the few chances that came their way fell to Bokányi but his long-range volley drifted just over the crossbar. The match ended on a sour note for the visitors when captain Máté Girán was shown a red card for violent conduct. The post-match penalty shootout which is performed in case of a tie of points after the group stage saw Puskás Academy win that as well to complete a perfect day for coach János Mózner and his team.
