Panathinaikos secure 5th place in PUSKÁS-SUZUKI CUP

Puskás Akadémia Fehérvár 0-2 Panathinaikos FC

14th June 2009.

Second-half goals from Panathinaikos' Kyriakos Andreopoulos and captain Valentinos Vlachos proved the difference in a tight PUSKÁS-SUZUKI CUP 5th/6th place play-off against Puskás Akadémia Fehérvár in the lunchtime kick-off today.

There was an early chance to open the scoring in the sun-drenched stadium of Székesfehérvár, home of Hungarian 1st division club FC Fehérvár when Bence Vég played in Gábor Iski with a long ball down the right flank but after advancing into the penalty area Iski could only find the legs of goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino.

Panathinaikos had an opportunity of their own when nice teamwork allowed Kyriakos Tsigkros to turn and shoot on his left foot but his low effort only found the sidenetting. Nikolaos-Iakovos Giannitsanis then laid the ball back for Alexandros Tachmazidis but his shot was deflected behind. The game was lively at this point and Ivan Klum exemplified this when he won the ball on the halfway line and ran all the way to the penalty before unleashing a low drive that headed just centimetres wide of the left upright.

It was certainly an even game in the first hour but neither side could find the breakthrough, Tachmazidis having perhaps the best chance of the second half up until that point when on 57 minutes he turned nicely in the area but cracked his shot over the crossbar.

Substitute Gergő Balog really should have opened the scoring when he burst through but elected to pass back instead of shooting and the ensuing shot flew harmlessly over. The home team were to pay the price just two minutes later when Andreopoulos found himself with space to shoot just inside the 'D' of the penalty area and found the bottom left corner with a low, well-struck shot.

Panathinaikos were then reduced to ten men in unfortunate circumstances when substitute Dimitrios Tassopoulos was stretchered off with all five permitted substitutions having been made. Balog was causing problems with his direct running and he fashioned another chance on 75 minutes but despite doing well to lift the ball past the advancing goalkeeper Tampakis the ball bounced just wide of the far left post.

Yet another substitute, Roland Szolnoki, was to have the last chance to equalise for the Hungarian team, shooting over the bar after a cross was only half-cleared, but it was the Greek visitors who had the final say, Vlachos breaking clear on the counter-attack and tucking the ball in the far left corner of the net. He could even have scored his second immediately afterwards but Márton Czuczi in the Puskás Akadémia goal did well to deny him in a one-on-one situation.
