Csordas leaves it late to win Cup for Ferencváros

Ferencváros 2-1 Honvéd

14th June 2009.

A late penalty by Szabolcs Csordás won the PUSKÁS-SUZUKI CUP for tournament debutants Ferencváros after  Levente Horváth cancelled out Richárd Czár's early opener in a very tight final match in the Sóstoi Stadion, Székesfehérvár today.
Honvéd had got off to the perfect start when Czár burst into the Ferencváros box, turned neatly and
fired the ball low past Péter Gábor in the Ferencváros goal. However, pre-match favourites Honvéd thought they were in for an easy match they were very much mistaken as Ferencváros fought their
back into the match. Shortly before the half-hour mark Horváth equalised by chipping Ádám Hernádi in the Honvéd goal after being put through by Szabolcs Gál.

That was his third goal of the tournament and he could have had a fourth eight minutes later when a
long diagonal ball towards the back post found him with a metre of space, but his first-time volley was unable to trouble Honvéd goalkeeper Hernádi. Honvéd then went close just before the break when a header from a corner went narrowly over but the scores were destined to be level going into the half-time break.

It seemed this was the way it would stay with Honvéd unable to unleash their hat-trick hero against
Real Madrid, the tightly-marked Roland Vólent, and Ferencváros' only threat being Horváth who was
usually crowded out by Honvéd defenders. Horváth did get free once on 49 minutes but he missed the target from just ten metres. At the other end the match-winner against Real Madrid, Richárd Vernes, who had come on as a substitute, had a chance to lift the ball over the goalkeeper from a narrow angle but he could only find Péter Gábor's grateful arms from close range.

And so it seemed the PUSKÁS-SUZUKI CUP Final would be decided by a penalty shootout but then, just two minutes from the final whistle, referee Viktor Kassai awarded a penalty to the green and whites for a foul on János Birtalan in the left corner of the box. Captain Csordás stepped up to coolly stroke home the penalty down the middle and send the whole Ferencváros delegation wild. Honvéd piled forward in a desperate attempt to equalise but it wasn't to be and a new name will be on the trophy when the teams return next year to contest the third edition of the PUSKÁS-SUZUKI CUP.
