The host team raced into the lead in just the third minute when Milan goalkeeper Eddi Gava spilled Zsolt Gajdos cross and Dávid Kiprich was on hand to tap the ball in for his third goal of the competition.
It wasn't until the 14th minute that Milan sufficiently recovered from this setback to fashion an effort on goal, Gianmarco De Feo exchanging passes with Carlo Calvetti and shooting low from 20 metres out, but László Mikola got down well to tip the ball around his left post.
Perhaps due to the wet and muddy conditions it was proving to be a rather open, end-to-end match to which the Puskás Academy were adapting better. First, Gajdos's right-wing free-kick was pushed over the bar by Gava and then Csaba Vachtler was given a shooting chance after plenty of pressure but his effort with the inside of his foot lacked power and curled into the arms of Gava.
If there's one thing these young footballers will need to become professionals though it is to learn from their mistakes and Vachtler did this with explosive effect, firing a free-kick with the laces of his boot from fully 35 metres through a crowd of players and into the net off Gava's outstretched right glove.
Milan though had not given up and had an immediate chance to pull a goal back but De Feo contrived to slip over in the area with just the keeper to beat. From here on the game degenerated into an attritional affair with both teams unable to find an accurate enough final pass to create clear opportunities. Just before the hour mark Jacopo Piacenza got in behind the Puskás Academy backline but his low skidding cross was well cut out at the back post by Patrik Cziránku.
The Hungarian team did not heed this warning though and Milan grabbed a lifeline in the 77th minute when Alex Pedone's through ball was toe-poked under Mikola and into the centre of the goal by Piacenza. Incredibly, Milan were back in the match and the comeback was complete in the dying seconds, Piacenza drilling a half-clearance from a corner along the ground and through everyone to leave Mikola unsighted and the ball again nestling in the
goal behind him.
And so it was by a dreaded penalty shootout that 5th and 6th place in the PUSKÁS-SUZUKI CUP 2010 would be decided. Milan captain Simone Bosisio was first to step up and confidently placed his spotkick in the right of the goal. Tibor Tóth converted for the Puskás Academy as did Calvetti for Milan and Sárkozi for the home side, but then Piacenza went from hero to villain, placing a weakly-struck penalty at Mikola diving to his right. Ádám Galambos
cemented the advantage and when Cristian Sansonetti hit the bar with his effort it looked all over. However, Vachtler saw his penalty saved and then Marco Bortoli netted to prolong the contest. Up stepped a calm Péter Hosszú though to score and confirm Videoton Puskas Akadémia as winners of the 5th/6th place play-off.
