Two 2nd-half goals seal deserved win in opening match of Group B

Honvéd ease to 2-0 victory over Hagi Academy

23rd April 2011.

Budapesti Honvéd got the win their domination deserved in the first Group B game of the 2011 PUSKÁS-SUZUKI CUP after second-half goals from substitute Sebestyén Ihring-Farkas and Attila Lőrinczy.

The first half was nearly all Honvéd's but they just could not convert possession into goals. Their lone striker Nikola Pantovic threatened three times in the first period, the first time in the 19th minute when a one-two with his fellow Serb Filip Holender sent him clean through but his shot was well tipped around the post by the Hagi Academy goalkeeper Vladut Hintascu; the second occasion soon after when he spun on the edge of the box but his rising drive flew wide of the left post and then for a third time on 38 minutes when he cut inside but Hintascu gathered his low shot.

Sandwiched amongst these were opportunities for his strike partner for the day Attila Lőrinczy as well but somehow the Hagi Academy held firm and even finished the half with a chance, but Albert Spiescu's looping volley from a half-cleared free-kick drifted just wide of Honvéd goalkeeper István Hernádi's left post.

Honvéd owner George F. Heningway and his team were in need a moment of magic to cement their domination of the game with an opening goal and ten minutes into the second half that inspiration arrived courtesy of substitute Sebestyén Ihring-Farkas, the left-sided midfielder receiving a pass on the left before immediately cutting in and firing an unstoppable drive past Hintascu and inside the far left post.

The Hagi Academy, you'd have thought, would have come out of their shell and look to take the initiative to get back in the game, but perhaps surprisingly they elected to keep men behind the ball and with Honvéd dropping their tempo and accuracy of passing the game descended into a turgid, scrappy, second-half affair.

Honvéd, though, were still the aggressors and they got the second goal they deserved when Lőrinczy's quickly taken free-kick caught out the Hagi Academy defence and curled straight into the unguarded far left side of the goal. The win leaves Honvéd top of Group B with three points from one game and Hagi Academy bottom of the group with no points. The post-match penalty shootout held in case of a tie on points between teams at the end of the group stage was also won by Honvéd.
