Early goal gives them scrappy win

Real Madrid secure narrow victory over Puskás Academy

23rd April 2011.

Sergio Jérez Balaguer's stunning fifth-minute strike gave Real victory in their first match of the 2011 PUSKÁS-SUZUKI CUP but they made hard work of overcoming a spirited Videton Puskás Akadémia team.

The match started in magnificent fashion when Real took the lead in just the 5th minute through a beautiful long-range, left-wing curler from Sergio Jérez Balaguer which flew into the far right corner of the net leaving Máté Wittner in the Puskás Academy goal with no chance.

Dávid Kiprich nearly replied for the Puskás Academy straightaway with a near-post header but so on several occasions could Real have also extended their lead, firstly in the 11th minute when a mix-up in the host team's defence left Real captain Bristol with a sight of an empty net, but his shot on the turn flew over the bar, and four minutes later when Balaguer was gifted the ball in the box with Wittner out of postion but the goalkeeper recovered well to block the shot and his defenders completed the clearance.

The game swung both ways but perhaps the defining moment of the match came two minutes into the second half when the impressive Alex had a golden chance to equalise but his close-range shot from Martin Hudák's left-wing cross hit his shin and looped over the bar. From this moment on the home team seemed to visibly tire but Real could still not secure the win despite another gilt-edged opportunity falling to Balaguer, the striker going clean through after a defensive error but somehow contriving to slip the ball wide of the goal from 10 metres out.

Real were dangerous on the break but couldn't apply the finishing touch to their frequent breaks and they were even in danger of conceding an equaliser later on but substitute Krisztián Géresi couldn't capitalise on Kiprich's knock-down from a corner, seeing the Real goalkeeper López fall to his right and gather his low drive.

So Real claimed the three points and also won the ensuing penalty shootout which helps decide placings in the event of a tie on points or goals at the end of the group stages. This leaves tomorrow's game between Real Madrid and Ferencváros as the group's decider with Videoton Puskás Akadémia only able to be runners-up at best.
