The player regarded as 20th century's best Slovakian footballer is alive and well and coming to watch the PUSKÁS-SUZUKI CUP matches. Jan Popluhar was a member of the Csechoslovakia national team that reached the 1962 World Cup Final. He is a living symbol of Slovan Bratislava.
Populhar represented Slovakia's most popular club, the Blue and Whites of Bratislava, with distinction, making 262 appearances and scoring 21 goals. He was capped 62 times for the Czechoslovakia national team with his biggest success being reaching the final in the 1962 World Cup in Chile. Indeed there was even one occasion when Populhar played in the same team as Ferenc Puskás; in 1963 both players were part of the 'Rest of the World' team that played England at Wembley to celebrate the English Football Association's centenary. The two players played alongside other luminaries such as Eusebio, Raymond Kopa and Alfredo Di Stefano in this most exclusive of representative teams. The Slovan Bratislava delegation is strengthened by one of the PUSKÁS-SUZUKI CUP's special guests, Jan Popluhar, and we look forward to welcoming him here!
