The first half was largely a cagey affair with the only half-chances falling to Honvéd, Krisztián Nagy and Zsolt Copas both seeing headers fly just wide of the Panathinaikos goal before Richárd Czár's swerving drive missed the top left corner of the net by a matter of ony a few centimetres.
Panathinaikos may have been forgiven for thinking they had weathered the Honvéd storm, but they would have been shaken from this thought seconds after the break when Gyula Lengyel received the ball in the left channel of the penalty area and slammed the ball high past Panathinaikos goalkeeper Stefano Kapino's right hand into the net.
The next quarter of an hour yielded little more than a few yellow cards and substitutions but when the next meaningful goal action came it was to give Honvéd the cushion they craved, Erdélyi slotting in the rebound from Czár's low blocked shot after a clever cutback from Gergő Nagy. Seven minutes later and it was 3-0 to Ferenc Puskás' former Hungarian team, Erdélyi's seemingly innocuous shot just rolling over the Panathinaikos goalline after a penalty area meleé. The only further chance of the 90 minutes fell to Erdélyi but he could not complete his hat-trick, his firm header from Botond Baráth's left-wing cross flying high over the crossbar. The ensuing penalty
shootout was won 2-0 by Honvéd, all of which means Panathinaikos will battle with Real Madrid tomorrow for the chance to contest the bronze medal match on Sunday while Honvéd will contest the Final with either Ferencváros or Slovan Bratislava.
